Having a baby could reduce your auto insurance premiums

It may sound like a joke but it is actually true. There are many factors impacting your auto insurance premium and one of them is how many kilometers you drive your vehicle in a year.

So let’s say you commute to work or to school every day 30 km each way. That’s roughly 16,000 km/year. Let’s add another 5,000 km for groceries, road trips, etc., bringing us to a total of 21,000 km/year. BUT now you are going on maternity leave: Will you still be driving this vehicle these same 21,000 km/year? Probably not. So reassess your situation and call you agent/broker and let them know the new/lower millage you want in your auto policy.  After you go back to work you can call them back and ask for a policy review.

The premium decrease will vary from insurance company to insurance company. Some companies will put less emphasis on the number of kilometers you drive a year to rate your insurance, others have a higher emphasis. What’s for sure, all insurance companies take this parameter in consideration, so make sure you let them know you are on maternity leave and won’t be driving as much!

Enjoy your baby and your maternity leave!
